Dental Post Operative Care Instructions

Following a Scale and Polish or Tooth Extraction

Anaesthetic                                                                                                                                                                                                          Your pet will gradually recover from the anaesthetic over the next 24-48 hours, but must be kept quiet and warm this evening. Some hair has been clipped from one or more legs and /or neck for the administration of the anaesthetic, intravenous fluids and any blood sampling. Anaesthesia usually involves placing a breathing tube down the windpipe and occasionally this may cause some irritation. You might notice a slight cough which should not last longer than 3-4 days.

Feeding                                                                                                                                                                                                         Water should be offered as soon as you get home. It’s best to wait 1-2 hours before offering a small meal of recovery diet approximately a third in quantity of a normal meal. With a scale and polish, there may be some discomfort in the mouth so avoid biscuits for a couple of days. If teeth have been extracted, feed soft food and avoid biscuits and chews for 4-5 days until the mouth has had time to heal. If your pet seems depressed or is not eating please phone the practice for further advice.
