Weight Loss Tips

Following these tips will help ensure that your pet not only has a healthy diet, but also will help maintain a healthy weight.

1. LOSE WEIGHT SAFELY AND STEADILY

Losing weight healthily takes time and it's important not to crash diet.  Speak to your vet or vet nurse about how to safely reduce your pet's daily intake

2. CHOOSE A FOOD THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR YOUR PET'S LIFE STAGE.

The dietary needs of a rapidly developing kitten are very different from those of a mature cat so choose a food that has been developed for his age to ensure he gets the perfect balance of nutrients to meet his needs.

3. WEIGH THE FOOD ACCURATELY.

It’s easy to overfeed if we just guess how much to give, and a few grams extra per day can soon mount up to a weight problem which carries long term health risks. It can be useful to weigh out the amount at the beginning of the day, to avoid accidental overfeeding.  Divide the daily allowance into several small meals for more effective weight loss.

4. FEED A SPECIALLY FORMULATED WEIGHT LOSS DIET

If cutting back the daily allowance isn't sufficient to achieve the desired weight loss, a specialist weight loss diet will usually be recommended.  For example, Hill's Metabolic has an 89% success rate.  Cats and dogs fed Hill's Metabolic have lost 28% body fat in just two months.  It keeps pets feeling fuller for longer and enables successful weight loss without going hungry. It's important to feed a weight loss food that still provides all the essential nutrients.

Introduce the new food gradually over a 7-day period by mixing your pet's former food with increasing proportions of the new food, until only the new food is being fed.

5. IT'S BEST TO AVOID TREATS.

Cats and dogs that are fed a balanced diet don’t need anything extra. If you want to use treats to help with training then it’s advisable to take some food away from their daily food ration and use this to avoid extra calories. I recommend you avoid human foods. Items that are small snacks for us are packed with calories equal to a large meal for our pets.  See the hidden calories in snacks

6. ALWAYS PROVIDE PLENTY FRESH WATER.

Access to sufficient clean water is vital for your pet's health.

7. REMOVE UNEATEN DOG FOOD AFTER 20 MINUTES.

This helps get them into the habit of eating at set times and it also prevent the food from spoiling which is particularly important with wet food and in warm weather.

8. DON'T WORRY ABOUT VARIETY.

Humans need a wide variety of foods to get all the nutrients we need. But high quality pet food brands, such as Hill’s Vet Essentials, contain all the nutrients pets need in a single food without the need to supplement with any other food.

9. AVOID FEEDING TABLE SCRAPS

To help avoid the temptation to feed your dog leftovers it's a good idea to keep them in a separate room when you're preparing food or eating, and be careful not to leave food lying around where pets can reach it.

10. ENSURE PETS GET PLENTY OF EXERCISE
